There are several requests on the Microsoft Dynamics Community forum to get an example or for the logic to print the serial no. or lot no. on the sales invoice report. In this post I will explain how to modify the standard sales invoice report (Report 10074: NAV 2015) to print the serial no. or lot no. on the report.

We have not encountered many companies using the Specific Costing Method, but there seems to be some misunderstanding of how the Specific Costing Method requires Serial Number Tracking and vice versa.
Dynamics NAV provides for very robust Serial Number and Lot Number Tracking.
When I advise clients about Serial and Lot Tracking, I say, “Only do it if you have to, as it adds additional user effort to record a transaction.” There are situations where you must use serial or lot tracking. These situations are primarily in the life science industries, where you might be producing medicines or if there is a human safety aspect to your product. Another situation is where you are subject to recalling defective products.

When product defects occur, the errors must be identified and affected items must be prevented from leaving the company. If defective items have already been shipped, you must trace who received them and, if you need to, recall the items.
Similar to the last post I have also been asked to listen to a serial port and import the data into NAV. I even used the same VB.NET service. On the NAV side I added two functions to my web service.
